The Sardinha de Lisboa is a special ceramic figure made by Bordallo Pinheiro. It is a tribute to the traditional Portuguese sardine, which plays an important role in Portuguese cuisine and is a symbol of the country's culture and identity.
The Sardinha de Lisboa is a hand-painted ceramic figure in the shape of a sardine. It is designed in vibrant colors and decorated with various patterns, designs, and motifs.
Dressed in the black cape of the students of Coimbra, this sardine swims above the rest: hardworking, top of the class – and yet always ready to celebrate. When she is not studying for the colorful ribbons of Portugal's oldest university, she plays Fado de Coimbra on her guitar late into the night. The Sardinha Coimbra embodies the youth, energy, and romance of the famous university city.
Designed by designer Craig Wheatley, each sardine is made in the Fayence factory in Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, and decorated by hand. It comes in packaging with a newspaper look – a reminiscence of the traditional sardine sales in Lisbon since the 18th century.
Whether as a wall object, collectible, or gift: The Sardinha Coimbra brings Portuguese student life and Fado romance into every home.
