FANGST is Danish / Norwegian and simply means: “Catch”.

“We are rooted in Scandinavia and are dedicated to developing Nordic food culture. This involves rediscovering and rethinking foods and preparation methods that have fallen into obscurity or are no longer respected. Canned seafood and fish are an art form that is far from reaching its full potential in our Nordic region. We have all the best conditions: hundreds of small canning factories have existed along our coasts for generations. So there is certainly a tradition. In addition, some of the best fish in the world live in our waters. Our culinary scene is also praised for its quality and innovation.

That is why we set out to rediscover the abundance of fish and seafood in the Nordic oceans. Using culinary expertise, we now serve delicious canned meals and snacks. There is still much to learn and develop, but we believe we are on the right track and hope that our customers will enjoy the results.

Respect for culinary craftsmanship is part of our mission. We have spoken with fishers, scientists, entrepreneurs, chefs, and other experts, and have encountered very different attitudes: For example, we work with some suppliers who are not certified because this is sometimes too complicated. For instance, we source our cold-pressed rapeseed oil from a small, non-certified supplier on the island of Bornholm. Simply because it is the best.

And we have decided not to be part of a particular labelling scheme – at least not initially. However, the fish in our cans actually come from MSC-certified fisheries or ASC-certified aquaculture.

We have also decided to work with sprat (“Brislinger”), which are mainly used as animal feed in Denmark, but could provide the protein requirements of the entire Danish population. Our next project is to work with bycatch, i.e. the fish and shellfish that are unintentionally caught while fishing for the most profitable species. For example, we are working on a variant with Nordic squid that is caught as bycatch during mackerel and herring fishing. Squid is an untapped resource and a species that thrives and is increasing in number in Nordic waters.
