Light with fresh notes of red fruit, yellow nectarines, a touch of lavender and a lively minerality. Best enjoyed lightly chilled (approx. 10°C) and poured into a decanter beforehand so it can breathe. "Renegado" is, by the way, the Portuguese word for "renegade".
Pairs well with: pizza, salad, salami, vegetables, picnics, aperitifs, and is very versatile on its own or as an accompaniment.
This wine is a "field blend" of red and white grapes from the Douro Valley.
A field blend is the remnant of an old winemaking tradition: In the past, vineyards were not planted with single varieties, but with different white and red grapes. When the time came, everything was harvested and fermented together.
Uivo Renegado is a field blend of more than 25 different indigenous grape varieties – 50% red and 50% white. The red varieties include, among others, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sousão, Bastardo, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca and Tinto Cão, while the white varieties include, among others, Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, Alvarinho, Gouveio, Verdelho, Esgana Cão and Viosinho.
The vineyards are over 80 years old and although they no longer yield much, the yield is of particularly good quality. The harvest takes place by hand in September and the wine is aged for half in used French barriques from second and third wines, and the other half in stainless steel tanks. The aging lasts 6 months, followed by 3 weeks of fermentation with natural yeasts.
