The Project
The Branco Vinhas Novas Monte Branco 2020 is another new project from the winery and the first vintage of this experimental line. What makes it special: It is made from young vines that are only three years old - a bold undertaking in winemaking.
Tasting Notes
It is quite good and presents itself as a curious undertaking. The wine is a little reductive, but also shows tension and appropriate concentration.
The acidity is key here - it gives the wine its characteristic expression. It is nervous and a little different, which sets it apart from conventional white wines.
The wine shows itself very well and demonstrates the potential of this experimental approach.
Grape Varieties & Vinification
This unusual cuvée combines three Portuguese grape varieties:
- 45% Arinto - provides structure and acidity
- 45% Rabigato - brings complexity and character
- 10% Galego Dourado - adds a rare, authentic note
The wine was aged for nine months in 30% new French oak with a moderate alcohol content of 12.6%.
Aging Potential - An Experiment
Luis Louro's view: "It can age" - the producer believes in its long-term potential.
Critical observation: It has often been disappointing how early vintages of very young wines age over their lifespan.
Recommendation: Enjoy this curious undertaking despite the strong acidity on the younger side.

The Producer
Luis Louro demonstrates his experimental spirit and courage for unconventional approaches with this project. The use of very young vines for a more premium wine is bold, but if successful, it could open up new ways in winemaking.
