The Sardinha de Lisboa is a special ceramic figure made by Bordallo Pinheiro. It is a tribute to the traditional Portuguese sardine, which plays an important role in Portuguese cuisine and is a symbol of the country's culture and identity.
The Sardinha de Lisboa is a hand-painted ceramic figure in the shape of a sardine. It is designed in vibrant colors and decorated with various patterns, designs, and motifs.
This sardine has a special story: It was once a Lisbon cat that loved sardines so much that it eventually turned into one itself! With its playful cat decoration, the Sardinha Gato is also a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro himself, who revered cats and immortalized them in many of his works.
Each sardine is made in the Caldas da Rainha earthenware factory founded by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro in 1884 and decorated by hand. It is delivered in packaging with a newspaper look – a reminiscence of the traditional sardine sale in Lisbon since the 18th century – including an overview of the complete collection with the stories of all the sardines.
Whether as a wall object, collectible, or gift for cat lovers: The Sardinha Gato brings Lisbon charm and a touch of humor to any home.
