All the facts at a glance:
- store the cheese in the refrigerator – unless you have a cool pantry or a cool cellar
- anything that prevents the cheese from breathing is unsuitable, because if it can't breathe, it starts to sweat.
- in the worst case, it also starts to mold, and then you will soon have to throw it away, which would be a shame.
- Cheese cannot breathe, for example, in plastic wrap or in a plastic container with a lid.
- Cheese that is sold in plastic packaging should also ideally be repackaged at home. The plastic is only intended to protect the cheese during transport.
- Ideally, cheese should be stored in a way that allows it to breathe. We recommend several options:
- Wrap it in wax paper and store it in the refrigerator's vegetable drawer, where it is slightly more humid and the cheese won't dry out as easily.
- Place it in a Tupperware container covered with a slightly damp tea towel – without a lid!
- Or make an improvised cheese bell. Simply place a layer of kitchen roll on a plate, put the cheese on top, and cover it with a (glass) bowl. That's it.
- Hard cheese can also be wrapped in a clean, slightly damp tea towel and stored in the refrigerator this way. This protects the cheese from drying out.
