Quevedo Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port 2019: The Essence of the Douro Valley
This Quevedo LBV 2019 is a deep ruby-red port from a single vintage and an excellent introduction to the world of aged ports. It combines the pure fruit concentration of an exceptional vintage with the elegance of extended barrel aging.
Terroir and winemaking:
The grapes—including Touriga Franca (45%), Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, and Sousão—were harvested in ideal ripeness after a hot and dry summer. Spontaneous fermentation took place in small stainless steel lagares to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine was initially aged for three years in stainless steel tanks, followed by another 1.5 years in large wooden barrels (Balseiro Oak). This gentle, extended aging in used French oak softens the tannins and gives the wine its characteristic elegance without overpowering the fruit aromas.
Tasting notes:
On the nose, the LBV 2019 reveals pronounced aromatic intensity: It presents fresh forest aromas and lively notes of wild berries (raspberries and redcurrants). Dark stone fruits such as cherries and black plums are added, rounded off by a subtle floral elegance with violet nuances.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and has an excellent structure. Fine tannins and high acidity bring freshness and complexity, perfectly balancing the natural sweetness of the fruit. The finish is long and intense.
Enjoyment and potential:
Although the Quevedo LBV 2019 is already approachable and ready to drink, it will undoubtedly gain depth and complexity with further aging in the bottle for another 10 to 15 years. It pairs excellently with dark chocolate, opulent fruit desserts, and hard aged cheese.
Port wine guide:
Ruby is the color of all red wines when they are made. Ruby Port has a red color, predominant aromas of red fruit, and is full-bodied on the palate. It is bottled while it is still young to preserve its red color and fresh aromas before they oxidize. It can be aged in oak, but only for a short time, no more than a few years, and almost always in large-capacity oak barrels to reduce the influence of oxygen during its aging. The ruby style varies depending on the intensity of the color, the complexity of the aromas, and the full-bodiedness. From less to more, here is the order:
- Ruby: a blend of approximately three-year-old port wine.
- Reserve Ruby: a blend of approximately six-year-old port wine.
- Late Bottled Vintage (LBV): a single vintage that is bottled 4 to 6 years after harvest.
- Crusted: Vintage Port that is bottled 2 to 5 years after harvest and aged for at least three years in the cellar to form a crust inside the bottle.
- Vintage: a vintage that is bottled 2 years after harvest.
