Conserveira “Pinhais” is a family-run business founded in 1920 in the small fishing village of Matosinhos near Porto. Today, almost 100 years later, the company is still family-owned under the leadership of Dr. Antonio Pinhal and is one of the country’s most renowned canned fish producers.
True to the company motto “Quality over quantity,” Pinhais & Co. Ltd. still uses traditional methods, with very little done by machines and most of the work carried out by hand—a rarity today. The olive oil is of excellent quality because the Pinhais family owns its own olive grove in Trás-os-Montes.

Mackerel cans are often produced with even greater care than, for example, sardine cans, in which the fish are packed whole: mackerel, on the other hand, is first carefully filleted and gutted by hand. This means our mackerel cans contain no bones, scales, or heads, making them a good choice, especially for beginners.

Mackerel is a migratory fish that travels in large schools. In winter, mackerel stays in deep waters, but in spring it migrates near the coast, where it finds more food. It is fished between mid-January and mid-March.
