Curry-flavored mackerel: the most unusual can in the range, and the one with the best oil.
For this can, Tricana preserves the fillets in extra virgin olive oil, the only time the quality of the oil is explicitly mentioned. Curry is added, along with salt. In Lisbon, this can is usually only found in the century-old grocery store on Praça do Comércio.
Curry and fish is not an exotic combination in Portugal, but rather a legacy of the trade routes to Goa and Malacca. The spice coats the mackerel in a warm, slightly sweet flavor without being hot. For those who have only known oil, tomato, and lemon in tinned fish, this is the biggest departure. And anyone who has curry in mind will be surprised by how well it pairs with such a robust fish.
Tricana uses traditional Portuguese methods in Lisbon and rejects mass production. The fish goes into the can raw and is cooked inside, along with the oil and seasoning. It is preserved using only olive oil and salt.
Serve the fillets with rice and a dollop of yogurt, or on bread with thin slices of cucumber. Take the oil with you too—it has absorbed the curry. Beer is a better match than wine, or perhaps a semi-dry white.
