Josè Noè is a hazelnut grower in Lequio Berria, Piedmont – and he does it for the love of it.

For over 30 years, he worked at a research center for raw materials in the confectionery industry, but a few years ago he felt the desire to live and work in a more traditional and nature-oriented way. So he made a radical change and took over his family farm, where he has since grown his own hazelnut trees and marketed the harvest himself. His estate covers around 12 hectares, where 4,200 trees grow on partially very steep slopes at an altitude of around 680 meters.

Cultivation on these inaccessible individual plots is arduous, but only there are the climatic conditions in which the “Tonda Gentile delle Langhe” variety grows and thrives. This indigenous variety is considered by connoisseurs to be the best in the world.
The harvest begins at the end of August and lasts for more than six weeks. As soon as the fully ripe nuts fall from the trees, Noè and his employees collect them so that they do not absorb too much moisture from the soil.
