Powerful minerality meets fruit elegance
This distinctive Saint-Joseph is the result of masterfully combining mineral precision with fruit-forward opulence. Nicolas Jaboulet and Alexandre Caso have created a Syrah that unites the essence of granite terroir with the appellation's classic depth of fruit.
Terroir & Origin: The Syrah vines are deeply rooted in the granite slopes of Saint Jean de Muzols and Tournon. The terraced steep slopes, with their east- to southeast-facing orientation, follow the winding course of the Rhône. Cultivated since antiquity, these slopes form part of the prestigious 40-kilometer-long Saint-Joseph appellation and lend the wine its unmistakable mineral vein. The terroir of weathered granite and granite gravel defines the noble character of this wine.
Character & Aromatics: Deep, almost impenetrable ruby red with bright purple reflections. The nose unfolds with complexity and precision—juicy red and dark berries intertwine with spicy pepper notes and delicate spice nuances, the typical signature of Syrah grown on granite soils. The palate begins with invigorating freshness before the wine's impressive harmony reveals itself. The tannin structure is fine-grained and silky, interwoven with aromas of black fruit and white pepper. The long, lingering finish is carried by refreshing liveliness and a subtle mineral tension—a clear expression of the exceptional terroir. A wine of remarkable character that combines power with elegance and a moderate, stomach-friendly acidity.
Vinification: The philosophy: to achieve, year after year, the perfect symbiosis between the minerality of the granite and the fruity richness of Saint-Joseph. After hand-harvesting, a maceration of approximately twenty days follows, with controlled extraction—initially through gentle remontage, then through targeted pigeage for optimal tannin structure. The subsequent twelve-month aging in oak barrels adds further complexity to the wine and harmoniously rounds out its powerful structure.
Serving Recommendation: At 17°C, this Saint-Joseph reveals its full splendor. An ideal partner for grilled beef steak, braised lamb, or game with rich sauces. Also an excellent choice with aged hard cheese or hearty stews. The wine is already very approachable and will reach its full potential over the next three years.
The 2023 vintage was marked by extreme contrasts—a mild winter, a wet spring, hail, and drought in the summer. The challenging harvest between August 17 and September 20 required constant adjustments and precise timing. The effort was rewarded: the red wines from the hillside vineyards shine with density and the characteristic "granite glow," while simultaneously displaying surprising freshness and perfect balance.
